Black Sea Coast Bulgarian Cities to visit

Here is a list of the most amazing cities/places to visit on the Black Sea Coast:

1. Sunny Beach (slunchiv brag). This is the meca of all tourist cities on the Black Sea Coast. The beach boasts hotels and restaurants filled with tourists from all over the world. Casinos and Discoteccas are frequented by the 18+ year old crowd. There are some great souvenir shops as well. The beach gets pretty crowded but if you are looking for a fun party, this is the place to be.

2. Golden Fish (Zlatna Ribka) Beach. This beach is on the way to Sozopol. One of the quietest and most beautiful beaches, Zlatna Ribka is frequented by the Bulgarian population. Take a dip in the warm water and swim among the most beautiful fish.

3. Nessebar. One of the most ancient towns in Bulgaria, Nessebar combines rural castles and cobble stones. You will spend a day getting lost in the many pathways of this ancient town.

4. Sozopol. Want a mixture of Bulgarian food and entertainment? This is the city you want to visit on the Black Sea Coast. The city is constantly lively and a big tourist location for out of towners. The #1 place I can recommend in Sozopol is “Restaurant Windmill.” You will get authentic Bulgarian food and dancing there. It overlooks the Black Sea. There are a gazzilion souvenir shops located on the cobblestone alleys and great jewelry to purchase.

Burgas, Bulgaria

Tourism at its finest, Burgas really caters to travelers from all over the world. The city is on the coast of the Black Sea. I have spent many summers here enjoying the beauty of the Black Sea and the center of the city. This city is a mixture of old-meets-new as it has been restored recently to cater to its main revenue stream of tourism. You can easily rent a car in Burgas and go to one of the many other tourist cities on the coast.

Here are my favorite places/things in Burgas:

1. The Beach. you can spend all day and night at the beach as there are many coffee shops that turn into nightclubs at night. You can literally dance on the sand as Chalga music echos off the Black Sea. You do have to pay for chairs at the beach, but trust me it is completely worth it.

2. Sea Garden (Morska Gradina). This park wraps the beach in Burgas. It is one of my favorite places in Bulgaria. Filled with cafes, playgrounds, and discoteccas, this park has everything you could ask for. Many young couples snuggle underneath the trees  (and my grandpa said that this is the place that he first kissed my grandma…awww). You can actually walk to the park from the center of Burgas. Try the ice-cream from the ice-cream vendors in the park.

3. Center of Burgas. Alexandrovska Street. This is the center of Burgas. Filled with shopping and cafes (yes, this is a common theme in Bulgaria), the center is full of life from day to night. You can see the best fashion here as this area serves as a spontaneous fashion show for the young and beautiful. There are many restaurants here too, and any place you explore will have authentic Bulgarian food.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria

So I am a little biased about this post simply because I was born here.

Plovdiv is one of the most amazing places in the world. Filled with culture and spirit, the streets of Plovdiv are intertwined with sculptures of wars and churches lined with candles lit up by Bulgarians wishing their family and friends health love and happiness. The importance of past Bulgaria is visible in Plovdiv as the city maintains and supports “Old Plovdiv.” This.is.one.of.the.most.beautiful.places.in.the.world.

If you need further advice on this city, please write to us. We go back often to visit family and are always experiencing new places in this beautiful city.

Here are my favorite places/things in Plovdiv:

1. Plovdiv Roman Theater. This theater is located in “Old Plovdiv” or “Stari Grad” in Bulgarian. It overlooks all of Plovdiv. Plays and concerts still echo in this theater. I recommend grabbing an espresso and sitting in silence for 30 minutes thinking about your life and the path you have taken. Trust me, you will gain some guidance sitting in this ancient theater.

2. Statue of Alyosha. My grandpa used to hike up to this statue a long time ago. Once a place for young couples to get away from the city and families to hold picnics, it is now unfortunately decorated with graffiti. I don’t recommend hiking up to the statue now unless you are with a big group, but you can enjoy the statue from a far as it boasts high above the buildings in Plovdiv. The statue represents the Soviet Army and Bulgaria’s liberation from Nazi Germany. If you do want the best views of the city, standing next to Alyosha will be your best bet.

3.Trimontium Princess Hotel Plovdiv. This is the most beautiful hotel here in Plovdiv. I highly recommend splurging on a room here as it is located right in downtown Plovdiv.

4. Joana Restaurant. Want the most authentic Bulgarian food? This is the place to go. The whole restaurant is decorated in Bulgarian artifacts and the food is AMAZE! This restaurant is located right in the complex I grew up in so we frequented this place often if we wanted to splurge on a night out. Things to try: Shopska salata, kababchita, Kamanitza Beer, lutinitza, kartofi c sirine, sarmichki.

5. Maritsa (Марица) River. This river spans Plovdiv. Take some time soaking in the history of this river.

6. Gambling? Yes, Plovdiv has this too. We visited this casino when we went back to Bulgaria in 2010. I recommend going in and playing a hand. There is a great cafe right next to it as well that has wonderful espressos and cocktails.

7. Shopping? The best shopping in town is in the Center (главната) of Plovdiv Knyaz Aleksandar I street. Boutique shops and international brand shops mix between electronic stores and souvenir shops. People watching is done best here as the center serves as a mixing plate of beautiful Bulgarian women, laughing children, and elderly. I recommend walking to the center and experiencing the energy of 100 cafe shops engulfed in laughter and cigarette smoke.

8. Banitza. There are a lot of bakeries and cafe shops that sell this amazing Bulgarian pastry. It will change your life. Trust me.

Here are some great pictures of Plovdiv, Bulgaria:
